The duality syndrome
It is amazing how some people you look upon, stoop down so low that you wish you never knew them. "A" is one of them. Six years older to me "A" had till now always been a source of inspiration. She took a stand where her love life was concerned, made way for herself and stood her ground when going abroad for her masters was in question, when marriage time came she fought against the conventional system & made sure that her wedding was something that was done as & how she wanted it. All in all "A" has been a figure who all the girls look upon.
Today, eight years into her successful marriage "A" has two beautiful daughters & is expecting her third child. Yesterday "A" called to bid farewell. She was leaving for States for her delivery.
That took me by surprise. I was concerned if everything was alright.
She gave out a very satisfied laugh & said,
"Oh haan sub set hai. This time around things are a little different. The ultrasound report says its a male species, so we have to think long term na!"
I was kindoff shocked. This is not supposed to be the mentality of a twenty first century foreign qualified professional.
"But "A" why didnt you go at the time of the first two delilveries?"
"A" replied,
"Kanwal, i knew both the times it was going to be a a girl, so why bother? It this time that I need to plan ahead of time..."
I was so shock bound, didnt even manage to wish her well...
What discrimination! Hated myself for looking up to her at anytime in life at all....!
