the jolting spirit!
The morning of 8th October was a startling one. All local news channels were talking about
an earthquake which had hit Punjab & NWFP. Not knowing the intensity of the jolt,
the first impulsive action was to call up all relatives in tose regions. Knowing that all
was well, the day got into the usual patter. Returning home after a busy day at work-I found
everyone around me talking about the quake. Plonking myselfin front of the TV, I was hit by
the reality. There had been mass destruction. The scenes shown on tv made my goosebumps
jump out! My servants (who are family members) had already left for their villages.
My cooks grandchildren had gone to the village school, and never returned, cause the school
was just a heap of sand mountain now. My sufis (driver) brothers were also reported missing
because they were in the basement of their house, putting wood together when the jolt hit, &
now there was no mark of the house.
Every second the death toll was rising. I wanted to do something to help, but was lost as to
what was to be done.
At sehri time next morning, I recieved multiple sms's regarding the relief camp that was
put up at PAF museum. Little did I know that I was in for a pleasent surprise when I went
to drop stuff there.
It was amazing to see the spirit of my fellow karachites. There were more than 300 cars
making their way through the entrance. Everything was extremly organised. Children, men,
women, teenagers all were there to help. I had taken my gatekeeper with me, so that he
could help me take out the stuff from the car, but the need did not arise. The volunteers
personally came to the car to take the stuff! I didnt even need to get off....
Everyone was trying to help in their own way.
One child had a bag full of stuffed toys to give away-anything to
make the victims comfortable.
I was so stunned bound and touched.
one female, after giving in 3 bags of goods, took off the two gold bangles that she was wearing
& gave it to the man incharge, telling him to sell them & utilize the money for medicines!
wow!
It is at times like these that each & every indivisual actually comes together to make a difference!
Hats off to all the people who are actually making a difference!
